About Me

My Approach

Laura Wakefield, Therapist for Couples and Individuals

As research has shown time and again, we find the capacity to grow when we are able to experience secure attachment with others. Unfortunately, many of us have not experienced with the warmth, support, and unconditional positive regard necessary to develop this internal sense of security and confidence. With that in mind, my first priority as a therapist is to create a space for you to experience value, care, and security in the ways every person needs in order to grow effectively. Using warmth, understanding, and humor, I want to help you learn to process your fears, understand what healthy development can look like for you, and find healing from the head to the heart. Whether you're seeking support as an individual or as part of a couple, I hope to help you gain confidence in yourself and your relationships through deeper connection with yourself and a deeper understanding of the world that shaped you. Therapy is brave work and I am always humbled, grateful, and inspired by each person who comes into my office. I am honored to work with individuals and couples of all nationalities, ethnicities, religion, cultures, sexual identities, and gender identities and my goal is that you see and feel in every session the respect that I hold for all my clients.

Heart Held Therapy Background

Background and Experience

While working in the mental health field, I have had the privilege of working with individuals and couples facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, and relationship distress. In my professional, and personal experience, I have seen how therapy can help individuals and couples discover and create value in their lives despite the challenges they face, which is why I have pursued this career path. I am passionate about helping others in the development of their inner resources so they are equipped to meet their challenges effectively and move towards the goals they have for their lives and I love seeing the transformation that can occur for clients as we work together.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and received my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have worked with clients in both the in-home and outpatient settings and currently see couples and individuals. I have completed the EFT Level 1 Externship for Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy as well as Basic Training in EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I am also a Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 1 Certified clinician and am a Certified Prepare/Enrich Facilitator trained in its structured approach to pre-marital/marital counseling.

As an out of network provider, I do not accept or work with insurance companies. However, I do provide superbills for clients upon request so that they can submit them to their insurance provider. If you have out of network benefits, please ask your insurance provider what they may require and what counseling services they reimburse. However, please note that most insurance companies require a diagnosis (i.e., “major depression” or “obsessive-compulsive disorder”) to be listed on superbills in order to provide reimbursement.

Why I am an Out of Network Provider

Ultimately, I am an out of network provider because it expands my ability to provide the support and care I want to offer to my clients. When you work with an out of network provider, you are more in control of your care as a client, having the freedom to choose your own therapist, decide on length of treatment, and experiencing increased privacy and confidentiality. You do not have to have a mental health disorder diagnosis on your medical record unless it is requested for reimbursement purposes, and we can consult on non-psychiatric issues that are important to you that aren’t billable by insurance, such as learning how to cope with life changes, gaining more effective communication techniques for your relationships, and increasing personal insight into values and goals. However if the decision is made to pursue in-network services, I am happy to help you choose an in-network provider to the best of my ability if you provide me with a list of those in your insurance company’s network.
